Counselling with couples
Couples counselling is about your relationship and helping you to work together to make it as loving and fulfilling as it can be. No sides are taken and neutrality is maintained. So we can explore, understand and identify the aspects of your relationship that is causing you concern, hurt and anger. Compared to the positive aspects of the love, support and the ways in which your relationship is working.
For each member of the couple, history and culture can play a huge part in your relationship. It can also inform beliefs, values and expectations, and sometimes this can cause clashes. Couples counselling work therefore may involve understanding yourself as well as your partner more, so that beliefs and values can be greater understood which can make them more complementary for yourselves.
The decision of whether couples remain together or separate is not the therapist's decision, and the choice will ultimately always belong to you the couple. What couples therapy provides is a safe space for you to explore what you want from the relationship. And work out how you fit together, how you communicate, your conflicts and your love.
I have many years of training and experience working with different types of couples (see below). To get the most out of your relationship counselling sessions you would attend weekly and in person, at my practice.
Couples work maybe short term (6 to 12 weeks) or long term (6 months to open ended). The length of time you may need will depend on many factors including where your relationship is now and where you would (both) like it to be. Plus how deep-rooted or long-standing any issues are. This would be discussed to form a shared understanding of both of your needs.
